WORSHIP THROUGH THE LITURGICAL YEAR

Throughout the year, our school follows the rhythm of the Church’s liturgical calendar. We mark important seasons, feast days and special celebrations through prayer, Mass, liturgy, Scripture, music, reflection and acts of service.
This helps our children understand the story of our faith and experience the richness of Catholic tradition as we journey together through Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Pentecost and Ordinary Time.
Whole school worship brings our St Patrick’s family together in prayer, praise and celebration. Through Mass, assemblies, hymn practice, special liturgies and shared times of reflection, children experience the joy of praying as one community.
Pupils are encouraged to take active roles as readers, musicians, prayer leaders and artists. This helps them grow in confidence and understand that worship is something we share, prepare for and contribute to together.
Schools Liturgical Calendar
Prayer and Liturgy Across the School Year
Our provision follows the Sunday Gospel readings, the liturgical calendar, feast days and key moments in the life of the Church. Children regularly listen to Scripture, reflect through Lectio Divina, take part in whole-school worship and join together in prayer as a Catholic school family.
Throughout the year, our assemblies help children understand important seasons and celebrations such as Advent, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Mission Month, All Souls, Christ the King, the Month of Mary, Corpus Christi and the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. These moments help children see that our faith is alive throughout the year and that each season invites us to pray, reflect and respond in different ways.
Children also take part in class Masses at St Mary’s Church and regularly join St Mary’s online Mass. These opportunities strengthen our links with the parish and help pupils understand that they are part of the wider Catholic community. Worship is not limited to one place or one moment; it is woven through school life, from classroom prayer and hymn practice to whole-school Masses and special liturgies.
Our prayer and liturgy provision is also closely linked to our Living and Learning Statements. Through Scripture and parables, children reflect on values such as courage, respect, honesty, love, hope and resilience. These assemblies help pupils understand how the teachings of Jesus can guide their choices, relationships and actions every day.
Alongside our liturgical provision, we plan regular SMSC and SEMH assemblies which help children think about important issues through a Catholic lens. Themes such as peace, fairness, racial justice, mental health, disability awareness, anti-bullying, online safety, road safety and standing against discrimination help children understand that faith is lived out through our words, choices and actions.
In this way, prayer and worship at St Patrick’s help children to grow in faith, deepen their understanding of Scripture, celebrate the life of the Church and put God’s love into action in school, at home, in the parish and in the wider world.
Celebrating Mass Together
Mass is an important part of Catholic life at St Patrick’s. Throughout the year, children visit St Mary’s Church to celebrate Mass with Father Paul and our parish community.
We also join with other local Catholic schools for special Masses and celebrations, helping our children understand that they belong to a wider family of faith.
Our Mass sheets support children to follow the Mass, join in with prayers and responses, and take an active part in worship.
Through these experiences, children learn that Mass is not only something we attend, but something we participate in together as God’s family.
