At St Patrick’s, we see art and design as a vehicle for creativity and individual expression. We provide pupils with a high-quality art and design curriculum, which encourages experimentation, sets challenges, engages and inspires children and equips them with the knowledge and skills and experiences they need to become confident, creative decision makers.
Our Curriculum
The structure of our art and design curriculum is based on four key pillars which underpin all of our learning: artists, skills, create and critique - with knowledge flowing through each of these. These pillars are interconnected with the aim of empowering all of our children to think creatively critically; to provide experiences of the varied disciplines of art, design and craft and develop our children’s understanding of the contribution art makes to our rich culture and society.

The art curriculum at St Patrick's has been designed to ensure that the National Curriculum for art and design has been covered whilst taking on board findings of the OFSTED Research Review for Art and Design and the NSEAD Framework for Progression. It has been personalised to meet the needs of our children and to reflect our school.

Art & Design Vocabulary
Formal Elements are the building blocks that make up all art. The formal elements are:
- Colour
- Line
- Space - The area around and between objects.
- Shape - 2D Shape
- Form - 3D shape or the illusion of one created on the page.
- Tone - How light or dark something is.
- Pattern - Repeated design.
- Texture – The surface quality and the way it feels
Art & Design Symbols
To support our children's understanding of the key concepts in art and design, we have designed some symbols that are used in conjunction with our curriculum. Through linking a symbol to the concept, our children are able to understand what it means; because the symbols are used throughout the school from Early Years to Year 6, this enables them to have a deeper understanding of what it means and to be able to make links across lessons.

All planning is devised using the same format. This is to support teaching and learning and planning for consolidation and progression.
Learning in action
We take every opportunity to enhance our learning in art. This includes: working with local artists; extra-curricular art and craft clubs; holding craft fayres; annual Art’s Week; art projects and exhibitions to enhance our community spaces and working with our church.
