'Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.'
Daily Phonic Lessons
Phonics is taught daily in EYFS to Year 2. Phonics is taught using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of alphabetical code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. As a result, all our children are able to tackle unfamiliar words as they read. At St Patrick's, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics shared reading and writing across the curriculum. We have a strong focus on language development for our children, as speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects.
The Little Wandle phonics scheme is taught by trained members of staff. The daily lessons follow a detailed plan, and all staff follow the same structure to ensure consistency and fidelity. At the start of EYFS, children build on from shorter daily sessions to the full length lessons as quicky as possible. Each week, learning is reviewed to help children become confident and fluent in their new learning, and to consolidate previous graphemes and phonemes.
Once children have completed Phase 5, they move onto the Little Wandle bridge to spelling programme.
Formative assessment is used daily, and any children who require extra support receive daily keep- up support. Children in KS2, are supported by our Reading Intervention Teacher.
